  18. <p>A playwright and popular hero is jailed
  19. </p>
  20. <p>    Vaclav Havel has been fighting for freedom in Czechoslovakia
  21. since the day Warsaw Pact forces crushed the reform movement
  22. that flowered in the spring of 1968. So it was hardly surprising
  23. that he was arrested on Jan. 16, along with eight other
  24. activists, while trying to lay flowers in Prague's Wenceslas
  25. Square. That was where student Jan Palach set himself ablaze two
  26. decades earlier to protest the Soviet-led invasion of
  27. Czechoslovakia.
  28. </p>
  29. <p>    Havel, 52, is not only a playwright and essayist but also a
  30. popular Czech hero who has firsthand knowledge of the Prague
  31. regime's harsh treatment of dissidents. In the past two decades
  32. he has spent a total of 4 1/2 years behind bars for his
  33. activities as a founding member of the Charter 77 human rights
  34. organization.

  36. <p>    Havel holds numerous awards and honors for his plays, which
  37. include The Garden Party and Largo Desolato; essays The Power of
  38. the Powerless; and Letters to Olga, a collection of missives
  39. that he wrote to his wife while in prison. Havel's work
  40. reflects the struggle of citizens in a totalitarian state.
  41. Although he is both produced and published abroad, his work has
  42. been banned in Czechoslovakia since 1969 and must circulate
  43. underground.

  45. <p>    In 1979 Havel was offered the chance to emigrate to the U.S.
  46. to avoid a conviction for subversive activities. He refused,
  47. saying, "The solution of this human situation does not lie in
  48. leaving it. Fourteen million people can't just go and leave
  49. Czechoslovakia empty." That decision won Havel the respect and
  50. admiration of many Czechs. Says Charter 77 activist Martin
  51. Palou: "Havel is a symbol of hope for the future, a man who can
  52. articulate many people's feelings."
  53. </p>
  54. <p>    Last week Havel told his judges of his appearance in
  55. Wenceslas Square: "I was there for one hour. Something happened
  56. that I had never even dreamed of. After the totally unnecessary
  57. intervention by the police, the onlookers changed into real
  58. protesters." He was sentenced to nine months for inciting a
  59. public protest and obstructing a public official who had
  60. ordered him to leave the square.
